Col-facts
Schuyler (sky-ler) Colfax was elected Speaker of the House in 1862. He served as vice-president to Ulysses S. Grant from 1869-73. As Speaker, Colfax led the effort to pass what would become the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery. Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road, contains several references to Colfax Avenue.
